City of Gatineau launches innovative program to address fire prevention labour shortage

The City of Gatineau has recently unveiled an innovative initiative to address the labour shortage in fire prevention. In partnership with Cégep de l'Outaouais, a free training program will be launched in January 2025, offering citizens in the Outaouais region a unique opportunity to train and work in this critical sector. This initiative, the first of its kind in Quebec, aims to fill the growing need for fire prevention officers as the city continues to expand.
Faced with increased risks related to urban growth, the City is looking to recruit more than a dozen fire prevention officers through a one-year Attestation of College Studies (AEC) program in fire prevention. In exchange for a job offer, candidates will commit to completing the full-time program, which includes practical training with the Gatineau Fire Department (SSIG) and a $12,000 scholarship to assist with the transition back to school.
This program is designed not only to meet immediate staffing needs but also to prepare for future challenges, as outlined in the city’s new Fire Risk Coverage Plan, which came into effect in February 2024. The training will take place in facilities provided by the City of Gatineau, and upon successful completion, participants will be guaranteed a position with the SSIG.
"This program is a creative and innovative solution that will help us fill several positions," said Simon Rousseau, Director General of the City of Gatineau. "It's also another step in our efforts related to the new fire risk coverage plan, which calls for a significant increase in personnel due to Gatineau's growth. We invite all interested individuals to apply and become part of our team."
The program offers a starting annual salary of $68,000 for permanent positions, along with benefits and a four-day workweek. Interested candidates have until September 30, 2024, to apply, and selection processes will take place in October and November. Additionally, informational sessions will be held on September 28, 2024, at Fire Station No. 5, providing an opportunity for prospective candidates to meet professionals in the field and learn more about the program.
Steve Brabant, Director General of Cégep de l'Outaouais, expressed pride in collaborating with the City to provide this high-quality training. "This program will equip participants with the necessary skills to protect our citizens and ensure their safety. As an educational institution, we are committed to training qualified professionals who will directly contribute to the well-being of our community," he said.
To be eligible, candidates must have a college or university education, a valid driver’s licence, and an interest in fire safety. They must also commit to working for the City of Gatineau in a fire prevention role for a minimum of five years after completing the training. With eleven permanent positions to fill, this initiative offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community while securing a stable and rewarding career in fire prevention.
